In late January 2011, sales of digital books (eBooks) began outselling print versions on Amazon.com for the first time in history. And with that announcement, all doubts and questions about the long-term viability of eReader devices like the Kindle quickly evaporated.

The market has spoken loud and clear; readers love digitally published books, magazines and newspapers. And because of this, sales of Amazon’s Kindle devices have skyrocketed. But what exactly is a Kindle?

Simply put, a Kindle is Amazon.com‘s version of a generic eReader. An eReader is a device that allows people to read digitally published material. And the most common type of digital publication is an eBook (electronic book). These books (magazines and newspapers too) are found at Amazon’s eBook store (the Kindle Store) and can be downloaded from there directly to the device.
